Hip Hop Dance Division Routine Guidelines
Routines may incorporate street style movements, such as: breaking, popping, locking, krumping, etc. Emphasis should be placed on an authentic stylized technique, a grounded approach and attention to backbeat while incorporating technical skills, musicality, creativity, flow, control, and overall quality of movement. See score sheet and range of scores for more information.
  • Teams must have at least five (5) members.
  • Teams competing in the Team Performance Hip Hop Division will perform a choreographed routine not to exceed 2 minutes and 15 seconds (2:15) to demonstrate their style and expertise. Timing will begin with the first choreographed movement or note of the music. Timing will end with the last choreographed movement or note of the music, whichever comes last. Teams must exit the performance area immediately following the Routine.
  • Formal entrances which involve dance or technical skills are not permitted. Dancers should enter the performance area in a timely fashion.
  • Poms, hand held props, and costuming may be used. Standing items such as chairs, stool, ladders, etc. are not allowed. If you are unsure if your prop falls within the given definition, please contact us.
  • All staging, backdrops, special effects, or any items that may damage or otherwise alter the performance floor or environment are prohibited (water, powder, feathers, etc.).
  • Routines must be appropriate for family viewing. Any vulgar or suggestive movements (hip thrusting, inappropriate touching/slapping/positioning to one another, etc.), words, costuming or music will result in a .5 deduction per violation.
  • All performers (unless injured) must remain on stage throughout the entire performance. Dancers may not enter or exit the performance area once the routine has started or prior to the end of the routine.

Choreography and Costuming:

  • Suggestive, offensive, or vulgar choreography and/or music is inappropriate for family audiences and therefore lacks audience appeal.
  • Routine choreography should be appropriate and entertaining for all audience members. Vulgar or suggestive material is defined as any movement or choreography implying something improper or indecent, appearing offensive or sexual in content, and/or relaying lewd or profane gestures or implications. Inappropriate choreography, costuming and/or music may affect the judges’ overall impression and/or score of the routine.
  • All choreography should be age appropriate.
  • All costuming and makeup should be age appropriate and acceptable for family viewing.

Props:

  • Wearable and handheld items are allowed in all categories that can be removed and discarded from the body in a safe and controlled manner
